In May of 2020, a man named Darnell Reid was arrested on firearms-related charges.

Despite having prior run-ins with the law related to domestic violence, Reid was granted bail and ultimately released from jail after only six days. After he was released, he continuously flouted his bail conditions with impunity, yet faced no consequences.

Then, just two months after his release, Reid allegedly murdered his ex-girlfriend Hailey Henderson-Bellman. She was just 25 years old.

Police, government officials, the prosecutor, and his victims all wanted Reid to remain behind bars. Yet despite their pleas, a judge released Reid back on to the streets of Brampton.

September of 2021, a Brampton woman named Darun Henry was forced to defend her life from a vicious attacker who approached from behind while minding her own business in a park. The alleged attacker, Paul Yousif, has since been released on bail as well.

Hailey is dead today because our justice system failed to protect her. Yet despite this lesson, our justice system seems intent on repeating the same mistakes over and over again.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Mayor Patrick Brown and Brampton’s City Council is calling on the federal and provincial governments to reform bail to prioritize community safety and protect victims.
